City of Ilagan Continues to Reign as the Sports Tourism Hub of the North

The City of Ilagan has once again proven why it holds the title “Sports Tourism Hub of the North,” following consecutive successful sporting events held on October 18, 2025 — a clear testament to the city’s excellence, readiness, and unwavering support as a premier destination for major national competitions.

The Capital Arena roared with cheers and excitement during the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference, which featured powerhouse teams such as the Creamline Cool Smashers, Petro Gazz Angels, Galeries Highrisers, and Cherry Tigo Crossovers.

From the first serve to the final point, the arena was filled with energy and enthusiasm from thousands of volleyball fans — not only from Ilagan and across Region II but also from different parts of the country who came to witness the country’s top volleyball league live.

Spectators were treated to thrilling performances by well-known players like Alyssa Valdez, Brooke Van Sickle, Ara Galang, and Jean Asis, who showcased exceptional skill, athleticism, and professionalism throughout the competition.

During the event, Vice Mayor Jay Eveson Diaz extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Premier Volleyball League management for once again bringing the prestigious tournament to the City of Ilagan.

On the same day, the city also hosted the 1st Vice Mayor Jayve Diaz Amateur Boxing Tournament, in partnership with Elorde Boxing and Fitness Gym, which aims to strengthen grassroots sports development and nurture young athletes who may one day represent the city in higher-level competitions.

Aside from Ilagueño athletes, participants from Cauayan City, Kalinga, and nearby towns also joined, displaying discipline, sportsmanship, and dedication in every match. The tournament served as an avenue to highlight the continuous efforts of local governments in developing young athletes in the region — particularly Ilagan’s strong commitment through its ALAB Sports Development Program, which trains local athletes to be disciplined and competitive.

The City of Ilagan’s growing reputation as a premier sporting destination continues to attract national and international tournaments. In fact, this coming November, the city will host two games of the East Asia Super League (EASL) — an international basketball championship that includes the Philippines.

The Philippine team is set to face Taiwan’s Taoyuan Pilots on November 8, followed by another exciting match against the Macau Black Bears in December — both to be held in the City of Ilagan.

From PVL, MPBL, and PBA, to EASL, boxing, and athletics, Ilagan continues to shine as a hub of sports tourism — a result of the visionary leadership of Mayor Josemarie L. “Jay” Diaz and Vice Mayor Jayve Diaz, along with the dedicated officials of the City Government of Ilagan who consistently prioritize programs that promote youth development, health, and tourism.

These initiatives not only uplift the sports sector but also stimulate local economic growth, providing opportunities for industries such as hospitality, food and beverage, transportation, retail, MSMEs, and small local entrepreneurs who benefit from the influx of visitors, athletes, and tourists attending various events in the city.

Today, the City of Ilagan proudly stands as the Sports Tourism Hub of Northern Luzon — a recognition earned through its consistent hosting of national and international competitions.

Under the leadership of Mayor Jay Diaz and Vice Mayor Jayve Diaz, Ilagan continues to be a model of balanced progress — where tourism and economic development thrive hand in hand through programs designed for the long-term benefit of every Ilagueño.
